Cruising in Kansas City: the Liberty Memorial grounds
A museum hill with a long cruising history and a much quieter present. Go for a walk you could explain, not for a crowd that is not there.
Kansas City has no beach culture, and the historic outdoor ground is not a park that still runs on 1970s habits. The useful guide is the short one.
The hill
The Liberty Memorial is the National WWI Museum and Memorial at 2 Memorial Drive, in Penn Valley Park. Older patterns were cars on the drives around the monument and people on the wooded trails. Security around the memorial is heavier now, and a lot of the drive-by scene described in old guides is gone. What remains is a major museum on a hill that some men still use as a walk.
How to treat it
Arrive as you would at any civic landmark: daylight first, nothing that depends on an empty road, no plan that only works if a crowd appears. If the comments on the listing are old, believe the empty parking loop in front of you. Seattle’s estuary park is the other inland pin on Crusit with the same lesson. The coastal cities — New York, Miami, Provincetown — are a different trip entirely.
The Kansas City page is the pin. A new comment does more for the next person than another retelling of the 1970s.
