Cruising in Rome: parks, pines, and the beach at Capocotta

Two city parks for the evening, a pinewood and a dune beach once you are willing to ride the train toward Ostia.

Rome is not a one-park city. The evening scene is in the green space, and the summer scene is on the coast south of Ostia. Public sexual activity is illegal in Italy, so the useful version of this guide is about where to go and how to get home.

In the city

Villa Borghese, along the Galoppatoio, is the famous one: an old riding track inside the park, walkable from Spagna or Flaminio, busy on warm evenings. It is also full of people who are there for the museum and the view. Villa Gordiani, on Via Prenestina, is the east-Rome alternative after dusk, with less postcard traffic and more ordinary night-park risk.

Toward the sea

Capocotta, Il Buco, is the official-feeling gay and naturist stretch in the dunes, rainbow flags and all, reached by the Roma–Lido train and a bus along the coast. Castel Fusano is the pinewood behind the beach next door, shaded and used day and night in season. They combine well. They do not combine well if you have a dinner reservation in the centre.

How to plan it

Pick one side of the city per night. Borghese is a walk from the metro. Gordiani wants a clearer plan for getting back. The coast wants daylight and a train that is still running when you are done. Browse the rest of the city on the Rome map.
